First and foremost- do not lie – do not use Photoshop® or any other program to hide skin blemishes, eye infections, or remove 20 pounds. It is acceptable to pose your subject so that such conditions are not ‘front and center’ but if you doctor the image, the potential adopter will know as soon as they meet the animal. Trust will be gone. If the condition clears up take new images.

Animals that are heavy, but active, should be photographed outdoors. Even if they are not shown playing ‘fetch’ the setting suggests activity.

Next- as much as possible, shoot at their eve level. I was sitting in front of Rowdy so he is looking at me, without having his head tilted way up. This, combined with not using a flash (see below), gives a much clearer image.

When you can, shoot dogs outdoors. Generally, an overcast day is best. Our eyes adjust so we don’t realize that the light is still much brighter than inside. The lighter the animal’s fur, the more important it is to avoid a super-sunny day. Conversely, the darker an animal’s fur the more bright sunlight can bring out details and avoid the ‘black blob‘.

It may be easier to find a simple background that is not distracting outside. And if you can’t, using a fast shutter speed (and thus larger aperture) gives a shallow depth of field to help blur the background. If you have a DSLR with interchangeable lenses using one with a longer focal length and backing away from the subject also helps. And don’t be afraid of a busy background if it sets a mood; Paprika looks very much at home on the bench.

Of course, if you can get the services of a great photographer, you can also sell prints (such as these images of CCR pups) or gift items from magnets to blank journals (such as these ones with CWA felines). These items do require much larger file sizes.

But my final words are- enjoy it; if you are dreading the exercise it will show. Animals can sense it and images won’t be as good. I love working with animals, making great images that help them find their furever homes. Getting lots of kisses and waves of unconditional love is the proverbial icing on the cake.
